Hemorrhoids are incredibly common, even though few people talk openly about them. Instead, people with hemorrhoids sit in an uncomfortable silence, dealing with itching, stinging, bleeding, and discomfort like it’s something they have little choice about.
Hemorrhoids are small pillow-like vein clusters that rest close to the surface of the skin, just under the mucous membranes of the lowest parts of the rectum and anus. Internal hemorrhoids may not be felt at all, and only noticed when a small bit of blood finds its way onto toilet tissue. External hemorrhoids, however, are located on the skin around the anus, and these are the ones that will typically cause the most discomfort to sufferers.
Hemorrhoids are caused by excessive straining, spending too much time sitting with pressure, or chronic constipation. All these things interfere with proper blood flow in the area, causing hemorrhoids to form. Hemorrhoids are usually diagnosed with a simple physical exam.
There are several remedies that may be recommended for those with hemorrhoids. While hemorrhoids may not be cured immediately with any magical creams or procedures, the discomfort can be eased in a few ways until the hemorrhoids heal. Doctors may recommend incorporating more fiber into your diet to curb constipation, using the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge, or taking sitz baths to effectively ease discomfort when a hemorrhoid forms.
A hemorrhoid sitz bath is simple, effective, soothing, and comforting for those with hemorrhoids. Sitting in the warm water enhanced with a sitz soak can help to relieve itching, soothe irritation, and even curb spasms of the sphincter muscle. Medical experts often recommend a hemorrhoid sitz bath after a bowel movement, taking 15 to 20 minutes to sit in the sitz bath to allow the irritated area to be soothed.
Creating a sitz bath for hemorrhoids is simple. A portable sitz bath can be attached right to the toilet for comfort and convenience. In the portable sitz bath, pour warm water until you’re at a level where you can comfortably sit with the affected area submerged in water. If spilling occurs, water will simply spill back into the toilet bowl, so you don’t have to worry about a mess. Place about 1 to 2 tablespoons of sitz soak into each gallon of warm water and be prepared to sit for about 15-20 minutes. Once you’re done, gently pat the area dry with a clean, soft towel.
